A Blessing for my Daughters
A blessing for my daughters:
Dissent.
I give you permission to dissent in your full glorious fury.
There are some things worth fighting for.
So dig your beautiful heels in.
As you do so, hold your head straight and strong and keep your eyes steady.
Unblinking.
Dissenting can be the kindest action for the greater good.
May you be kind. Kind is better than nice.
Kindness walks arm in arm with patience and goodness. “Nice” is done for the sake of championing order, despite the cost to yourself.
You do not have to be nice.
Know your boundaries and guard them fiercely.
When (and I do mean when) you are made to feel “less than”— dissent to that too.
Go for it daughter. If it is good, and noble, and right, and true.
The image you bear lifts you high above where the world will try to keep you.
Dissent.
